How e-Sourcing Makes Sourcing Easier - a Buyer's View

Posted by Kelly Deacon on Aug 11, 2014 8:00:00 AM

As professionals, well as people - really, being open to new ideas and ways of doing things can make our lives more interesting, our experiences more rich, and can open up a whole new world we never knew existed.

Now narrow that idea to sourcing and procurement. There are a lot of solutions out there and filtering out the noise to know which ones are worth giving your time and attention to can be difficult. At the same time, the reflex to say, "no" can protect you from wasting resources, for example, but it can also hold you back from becoming an even better buyer. So, how do we decide when and what to pay attention to with so many people, tools, and solutions coming at us every day? We ask our peers.

Smart Sourcing With SpartanNash

Posted by Lindsay Bernacchi on Aug 7, 2014 8:00:00 AM

Creativity and embracing the unknown are always important themes for a successful e-sourcing program. It is as true now as it was over a decade ago when e-sourcing was in its infancy. You have seen this idea discussed lately in the blog 7 Things To Remember When Trying e-Sourcing For the First Time and within the newly published ebook, Improving e-Sourcing Success Through Effective Program Management. Both discuss this idea and give great suggestions on how to go about the idea of trying something new.

SpartanNash, a wholesale distributor and grocery retailer, has always done a great job of trying new things and utilizing e-sourcing to their full advantage. Back in 2012 we published an interview with Carrie Quigley who works in the Information Technology PMO at SpartanNash. Her experiences are a great example of embracing change and using e-sourcing for projects that may not be something you would have thought about in the past:

10 Questions with our Produce e-Sourcing Expert

Posted by Alanna Pashley on Jul 10, 2014 8:00:00 AM

Produce may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of strategic sourcing, but here at Intesource we work with several food service establishments who have embraced e-sourcing (and all the benefits it brings). That being said, no spend is off the strategic sourcing table.

Rene Munday, Client Services Representative at Intesource, and our resident produce expert, has extensive knowledge that has been invaluable when running e-sourcing events for fresh produce. I have had the pleasure of working in the same department as him and affectionately being called numerous nicknames from “Newbie” to “Cockroach”.  I was able to steal some time with him to ask 10 questions regarding the produce industry:

A Strategic Sourcing Success Story

Posted by Kelly Deacon on Mar 24, 2014 10:00:00 AM

In procurement the devil is in the details and many of those details come in the form of an extremely long list of not-for-resale products and services needed to run a retail operation (everything from facilities maintenance to supplies) along with carefully selected for resale categories. The cost of these products can weigh heavily on the profit margin of retailers. Fortunately, there is a way to substantially reduce these costs through the use of e-sourcing.

E-sourcing leverages the magic of the Internet to bring together multiple vendors of these products, who all get a shot at the retailer’s business. This process inevitably drives the price of goods and services down for the retailer.

Are you leaving potential opportunities on the table?

Posted by Teresa Yost on Sep 23, 2013 10:00:01 PM

Determining which categories to source is typically based on our decisions of previously set thresholds or our inclination to look towards high volume categories. Obviously these larger categories will tend to yield larger returns. While I think most of us agree with this strategy, the question remains; are we overlooking the smaller spend categories and leaving potential opportunities on the table? When does it make sense for a company to source small volume categories?

What a few of our partners said regarding this subject may interest you.

e-Sourcing Society Celebrates 100th Post

Posted by Kelly Deacon on Aug 5, 2013 10:00:09 PM

Today we’ve reached a milestone at the e-Sourcing Society - 100 posts! When we launched our blog in January of 2012 our blogging team, consisting of employees across the organization, sat down to brainstorm topics. We left that meeting with hundreds of ideas. I guess you could say we’re passionate about e-sourcing, but it would actually be more accurate to say we’re passionate about our customers and their success. About providing information to program managers, buyers, category managers, executives, and vendors that you can use today (or access down the road) to make your procurement activities more effective, efficient, and strategic.

We’ve featured educational posts like:

The Secret to Spartan’s e-Sourcing Success

Posted by Lindsay Bernacchi on Jul 22, 2013 10:00:15 PM

Spartan Stores has been working with Intesource for about two and a half years. In that time they have become one of our most successful partners – running in excess of 400 e-sourcing events. Spartan’s success can’t just be measured by the savings they have achieved but also the sheer number of projects (RFQ’s, RFP’s, RFI’s, and internal Surveys) they run through the system and the fact that they run those projects for more departments than any other Company. Bryan Porritt is the Project Manager at Spartan, heading up their Intesource e-Sourcing initiative. He is the man behind why they have been so active since the very beginning. Recently I asked him a few questions to try to get inside how they have been able to do what they’ve done.

Program Evolution: An Interview with Bashas'

Posted by Teresa Yost on Apr 2, 2013 10:00:45 PM

In March, Intesource hosted their annual Innovation Conference in Scottsdale Arizona. It was during Monday night’s awards banquet where Bashas’, a family-owned grocer that operates Food City, AJ’s Fine Foods, Sportsman’s Wine & Spirits, Eddie’s Country Store, and both Bashas’ and Bashas’ Dine supermarkets, received the Program Evolution Award for the greatest increase in e-sourcing event activity year over year; 2011 to 2012. Why is this worth mentioning? Bashas’ has earned this award consecutively over the past two years. So what’s the driving force? We met up with Dave Lang, Director of Retail Support and Purchasing for Bashas’ in a recent interview to discuss his first introduction into e-sourcing, his challenges and lessons learned.

A friendly interview with Dave Lang, Director of Retail Support and Purchasing for Bashas’
