Sourcing and the Cost Avoidance Conundrum

Posted by Teresa Yost on Aug 27, 2015 7:30:00 AM

Cost avoidance seems to be the hot topic lately according to a recent survey.  86% of the sourcing professionals surveyed said this subject has been an area of discussion.  As sourcing programs mature, many sourcing and procurement professionals are asking how other companies define cost avoidance and how it’s calculated.  As an account manager at Intesource, a PROACTIS company, I get asked these same questions quite often.

Defining cost avoidance is very important to a sourcing team when they’re responsible for securing the best overall programs for their organization.  In some cases the cost avoidance gain is factored into a companies’ annual budget.

Ever wonder what happens to your enhancements once they are submitted to Intesource? Or how your idea grows from a mere seed into sequoia - or maybe just a normal sized pine tree, or cactus....

Technology is constantly being modified because of innovation and evolution to stay compatible with reliant or supportive technologies - all intertwined in this crazy large matrix of 1s and 0s.

Impact and reach are key variables that are considered when moving an enhancement request into development (bringing to life). To give you an example of the impact an idea/product enhancement can have, I’ll use iOS (Apple’s mobile operating system):

Soon after updating to a new release of the iPhone operating system (OS), the app store icon floods with update notifications (Amazon, Yelp, Facebook, Chrome, Instagram, Southwest Airlines, your mobile banking application, etc.). Which, if you are like me, must be handled immediately to clear said red alert notification from view. Point being – one update/enhancement impacts various other applications – which in turn released their own update – to ensure compatibility and provide the best user experience for the consumer.
